Brissos need 4 wheel drive vehicles.

Brissos need 4 wheel drive vehicles.

Brissos will not easily get bogged. In spite of rising fuel costs, Brissos drive large 4 wheel drive vehicles; Pajeros, Landrovers, Landcruisers. These are often purchased by the male Brisso, who is always ready for any adventure. It is usually used by his wife (Brisso or not) to drive the family around in. Brissos will also have a second car. If the male Brisso drives the 4X vehicle, then a standard second car will do, preferably a Subaru AWD – because 2 off road vehicles are better than one. If the Brisso mother drives the 4X vehicle, then the second car is likely to be a luxury sedan, a BMW, Lexus or Mercedes.

In this choice of the 4 wheel drive family vehicle, Brissos bear resemblance to many other Australians, and indeed affluent suburban folk around the world, especially those in frontier societies for whom the Wild West is more than a Hollywood fantasy.

What differentiates Brissos from the others is that they need 4 wheel drive vehicles. They may also need to have the vehicle outfitted with a winch, special bullbars, customised roof racks, extra fuel tanks, and heavy duty suspension for outback conditions.

Suburban dwellers who drive such vehicles in other cities are wankers, but Brissos have a legitimate reason, the sand islands – Moreton and Straddy – which are not far from Brisbane and are beloved by all Brissos. It is important to Brissos that they can drive around and across these sand islands at any time, even if they don’t get to them often.

Brissos need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to drive on Moreton Island

Most Brissos of integrity will prove their difference from the wankers in other cities by taking their vehicles off road at least once a year (and may plan to pay for the opportunity to drive off-road at special driving instruction venues, or 4X ‘parks’ not far from Brisbane).

Brissos will explain that it is not the vehicle itself that is important to their identity, but the unique sand islands and all they have to offer (ordinary vehicles are useless on Fraser and Moreton islands).

Nevertheless an outsider will observe that such vehicles fit well with the temperament of Brissos: practical, gutsy, larger than life, and able to push through any situation or environment.

The 4 wheel drive vehicle is the Brisso’s ticket to freedom. Driving on the beach and around the islands is the quintessential Brisso experience.
